ARs genuinely run dirty. For your volume: wipe the bolt, re-lube the bolt carrier group well, and check the chamber after each trip — that 5-minute habit prevents almost every malfunction. Do a full detail clean a couple times a year or after a heavy/wet day. Lube matters far more than being spotless; a dry AR is what fails, not a dirty one.

It matters a lot. **Birdshot is for birds** — at defensive distances it tends to under-penetrate and may not reliably reach vitals, especially through heavy clothing or a barrier. For home defense run **00 buck or #1 buck**; both deliver multiple pellets with FBI-spec penetration. The one step everyone skips: pattern your specific gun with your chosen load at your actual hallway distance (often 5–7 yards). Loads pattern differently in every barrel, and you need to know your spread so every pellet is accounted for.

Pick a controlled-expansion hunting bullet, not a match load: Federal Fusion, Hornady SST/ELD-X, or Nosler Ballistic Tip/AccuBond are all excellent in .308 for deer. They expand reliably for a clean wound channel while holding enough weight to reach the vitals. Sight in with the exact load you will hunt — point of impact shifts between brands — and prioritize shot placement over raw power for ethical, meat-friendly kills.

The Romeo-X is a strong, modern entry. It comes in open (Compact) and fully enclosed (Pro) versions, so you can match it to a range gun or a hard-use carry pistol. Both run fine. The real question is what you can get serviced and fed. ARs win on parts availability in the US, full stop. If you ever want to add an optic, light, or different stock, the AR makes it painless.

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with either — both are top-tier, agency-proven loads with excellent gel and street records. HST is known for big, consistent expansion; Gold Dot is a bonded bullet prized for barrier performance and is a duty favorite. The practical answer: buy whichever your gun runs most reliably and that you can find in stock. The difference between them is far smaller than the difference between any premium JHP and cheap ammo.

A truck gun should be compact, rugged, and something you won't cry over if it's stolen — a folding PCC (Sub-2000), an AR pistol, or a basic carbine are popular. Two big things: (1) security — use a locked vehicle safe bolted in, not just under a seat; theft of vehicle guns is a real problem. (2) Legality — vehicle-carry and storage laws vary hugely by state. Check your state's rules before you do this.

A 44 magnum with heavy hard-cast bullets is a proven backcountry choice — deep penetration to reach vitals, and a revolver fires reliably even pressed against a charging animal. The honest limits are heavy recoil (hard follow-ups) and only 5-6 rounds. For the biggest grizzlies some go even bigger, but 44 is plenty for black bears and a solid all-around woods gun. Bear spray still has the best documented track record, so carry both, and load hard-cast for penetration, not expanding hunting bullets.
