AR-15 or AK-47 for a first rifle?
Looking at my first rifle for range use and some home defense. I keep going back and forth between an AR-15 and an AK. Ammo is easy to find for both right now. What actually matters for a first-time buyer — ergonomics, accuracy, parts availability?

For a first rifle I steer most students to the AR-15. The ergonomics are friendlier (safety, mag release, and controls fall right under your hand), it is more accurate out of the box, and the parts/accessory ecosystem is enormous so you can fix or upgrade anything cheaply. AKs are wonderfully durable but the manual of arms is clunkier and quality varies a lot by importer. Buy once, cry once on a quality AR and you will not feel limited.
Both run fine. The real question is what you can get serviced and fed. ARs win on parts availability in the US, full stop. If you ever want to add an optic, light, or different stock, the AR makes it painless.
