How much should I spend on a first pistol optic?

New to pistol red dots. Is it worth buying budget to start, or does a cheap dot just cost me twice?

For a range/optics-ready pistol you are learning on, a mid-tier dot is the sweet spot — something like a Holosun 507C or EPS Carry. Avoid the no-name sub-$100 dots; they fail and you re-buy. If the gun is purely a range toy, a Vortex Venom (top-load battery, lifetime warranty) is fine. If it is a carry/defensive gun, step up to a proven 507C/EPS or an RMR and co-witness with backup irons. Buy once, cry once on a defensive optic.
