For most first-time buyers in the US, the AR-15 is the better starting point: lighter recoil, more accurate, far more accessory and parts support, cheaper 5.56 in bulk, and ergonomics suited to fast handling. The AK wins on rugged simplicity and cheap steel ammo, and 7.62x39 hits a bit harder up close. Both are reliable if you train, but the AR is easier to shoot well, set up, and find parts for.
