20 Gauge
Lighter recoil than 12ga with real defensive and field performance — 20 gauge guns and loads.
About 20 Gauge
The 20 gauge offers most of the shotgun's advantages with noticeably less recoil than a 12 gauge. For recoil-sensitive, smaller, or newer shooters, that's a big deal — a 20-gauge you can shoot quickly and accurately beats a 12-gauge you flinch with. With quality buckshot it's a fully capable home-defense option at across-the-room distances.
It's also a fantastic upland and small-game field gun, and lighter to carry all day. The tradeoff is somewhat less raw power and a slightly smaller ammo selection than 12 gauge, but for defense and general use the 20 is far more than a 'beginner' gauge — it's a smart choice on its own merits.
