Can I just carry cheap FMJ for defense or do I really need hollow points? What is the actual difference?

Carry hollow points for defense, not FMJ. Full metal jacket does not expand, so it over-penetrates more (a risk to people beyond your target) and transfers less energy. Jacketed hollow points expand on impact, which improves effectiveness and reduces over-penetration — that is why every police agency issues JHP. Use cheap FMJ for practice to save money, but carry premium JHP you have verified runs in your gun.
