The Rundown

The Trijicon ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) is a legendary fixed 4x optic with a combat record across decades of military use. Its defining feature is battery-free illumination: a fiber-optic strand gathers ambient light by day and tritium glows the reticle at night, so the aiming point is always lit without electronics to fail. Its BDC reticle is calibrated for fast holdovers at known distances.

The tradeoffs are a fixed 4x (no 1x for close-quarters speed) and a price that reflects its build quality, plus a shorter eye relief that demands consistent cheek weld. With many shooters now choosing LPVOs for 1x-to-magnified versatility, the ACOG's niche has narrowed — but for a rugged, battery-free, do-or-die fixed-magnification optic on a fighting rifle, nothing else has its track record.
