Holdover
Aiming above the target to compensate for bullet drop at distances beyond your zero, instead of dialing the scope.
Holdover is the technique of aiming higher than the target to account for the bullet's drop at range. Rather than turning the elevation turret, you use reference points — hash marks on the reticle, the top of the duplex post, or a known amount of the target — to place the bullet on target. The reverse, 'holdunder', applies inside your near-zero crossing.
Holdover is fast and works well with a reticle designed for it (BDC or mil/MOA-hash reticles). For known distances and unhurried shots, dialing the turret can be more precise; for quick or changing-range shooting, holding over keeps you on the gun and on the clock. Many shooters mix both.
